1. Try a wine from a region you are not familiar with
2. Try a grape that you are not familiar with or try a grape you know that is grown in a completely different region than what you are used to
3. Don’t go for the ‘big name’ producers just based on the name
4. Don’t rely on the ratings from the wine magazines. If you want to buy it, do so and try it.
5. Never buy the least expensive wine on a restaurant wine list. You find the greater values in the $60-$90 range
6. Share all your wine ‘discovery’ and knowledge with your friends

These new wines are worth a taste

Red Lily's first wine, 2003 Tempranillo, was unveiled at a recent reception in Jacksonville. My overall impression: It is gentle and subtle. Very nice flavor, not too harsh or overpowering. But the retail price of $42 obviously makes it a special-occasion wine.

Red Lily owners Les and Rachael Martin have a vineyard on Thompson Creek Road and also buy grapes from Ellis Vineyards (Skipping Stone) and Pheasant Hill Vineyards.

"We have chosen to focus only on tempranillo," says Les Martin. "This passion and focus came from a deep love of Spanish wines, especially the earthy, concentrated tempranillos from the Ribera del Duero and Toro regions in Spain.

"Our first release, the 2003 Tempranillo, was comprised of 98 cases," he adds. "We just bottled our 2004 Tempranillo a few weeks ago (185 cases). We are anticipating that this wine will be available in August of 2007. We are committed to barrel-aging our wine for 24 months in oak and then following up with another year of bottle-aging before release."

Their 2-acre estate vineyard was planted in 2004, and they harvested their first crop last month.

The Red Lily 2003 Tempranillo was made at RoxyAnn by its winemaker, Gus Janeway, and by Rachael Martin.

"Rachael has worked at RoxyAnn for the past five years, apprenticing first under Sarah Powell and then Gus Janeway," says Les. "She is an aspiring winemaker and has gained invaluable experience working with Gus."

THE JACKSONVILLE INN PLANS a winemaker's dinner with wines from the Rogue Appellation Garagistes Society (Trium, Daisy Creek, etc.) at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 10. The five-course meal will feature local exotic mushrooms. Cost is $80. Call 899-1900.

FOOD & WINE MAGAZINE'S October issue carried a piece called "America's 50 Most Amazing Wine Experiences." In Oregon, the editors chose New Sammy's Cowboy Bistro in Talent. Here's what they said:

Del Rio 2005 Rose Jolee Early Muscat and Del Rio 2005 Pinot Gris. While some wines from this Gold Hill- area winery cost $25 to $40, these two do not. The rose is about $15, the pinot gris $16. The rose is especially good.
